The Why
Not even two weeks before I had to turn in this project, Out & Enrolled: Life for LGBTQ+ on The University of Olivet Campus, I had a situation of LGBTQ+ hate happen to me. I was walking down the sidewalk in Olivet on campus, and I was holding my girlfriend's hand. While we were walking, minding our own business, this car slowed down as they were driving by us, rolled down their window, and very angrily screamed the F-slur out the window. They then rolled up the window and drove away. Instead of letting that affect me and my project, I used it as fuel to keep going full steam ahead. It made me realize that the project is even more important than before. Homophobia and LGBTQ+ hate are still real and active things. The LGBTQ+ community is a community for a reason; you are never alone. My questions to the people who are homophobic is: Why does me loving another woman affect you so much to the point you deem it okay to yell hateful words? If it’s a choice to be gay, then when did you choose to be straight?
